While the United States, England, and many other countries attempted to follow in France’s steps and create paperweights to sell, France’s products almost always enjoyed greater longevity and were known for their outstanding quality. To acquire the large amounts of bronze to make brass paperweights, France was required to import the metal from countries like Spain and Portugal, who were in control of much of the metal trade at the time. In the early 20th century, artists became a larger part of paperweight making companies, and spread their appealing work around the world. Every studio had their unique, distinctive ‘lines’ of paperweights in a variety of materials and sizes. The east coast of the United States held a disproportionate amount of these studios, and competition was fierce. Artistically, nothing like the antique paperweights of the late 1800’s was created until the late 1960’s, when artists began a revival of paperweight making in the United States. Brass paperweights are in the midst of enjoying a relatively large interest in the modern day, as they are both functional and decorative to the extreme. Prior to this time, the Victorian era was the only other time to enjoy metal and brass paperweights as wholeheartedly. Brass and other metals were combined with glass in the Victorian era to produce paperweights of unique size, shape, and visual appeal. Collectors of paperweights are highly enthusiastic and knowledgeable, with some notable collectors including Oscar Wilde. Today, these brass paperweights are great beach decor examples. Paperweight exhibits often display the great breadth of artistry that paperweights can and have collected over the years, showing the evolution and adaption of the very art itself.
